How to clean the beauty egg

Ordinary makeup sponges are disposable, but beauty eggs and other similar blended sponges are specially designed products that can be used for a long time. That’s why you have to wash beauty eggs regularly to remove stains and harmful bacteria from them.

Basic cleaning

1
Prepare a dish of warm, soapy water. Fill a small dish with warm water and squeeze a little hand soap or shampoo into it, stirring gently until a lather forms on the surface of the water. It is generally not recommended to use detergent because it will irritate the skin when using the beauty egg later.
Baby shampoo and “mild” organic shampoos work well, but most skin- or hair-safe lotions can be used.

2
Soak the egg for 30 minutes. Place the egg in the soapy water, knead it twice or three times with your hands, and soak it for about 30 minutes.
Make sure there is enough water in the dish to completely immerse the beauty egg. If you don’t have enough water to start with, you can simply add more water as needed.
The water will start to change color while the egg is soaking. As foundation and other cosmetics are squeezed out of the egg, the water will take on a dull beige or tan color.
When the egg is soaked in soapy water, it will absorb water and swell to its maximum.

3
Squeeze some cleanser on the egg. Apply a beauty egg cleanser or similar cleaning solution directly to the dirtiest areas of the beauty egg and rub gently. It is important to use a mild cleanser to avoid damaging the beauty egg. If you prefer to use a solid soap, olive oil soap usually works well. If you want to use a liquid cleanser, consider using a moisturizing baby shampoo or a mildly formulated organic shampoo.
Rub for 2-3 minutes to get the cleanser into the beauty egg. Rub with your fingertips only, do not use a board brush or other brushes as they can easily damage the sponge.

4
Wash the cleanser off the egg. Rinse the egg with warm water until all the cleanser has been washed off. Any makeup that touches the surface of the egg should be rinsed off in this step.
Be sure to gently rub the egg under a stream of tap water to help remove the cleanser and makeup.

5
You can tell if the beauty egg has been thoroughly cleaned by the clarity of the water when washing. If the water in which the beauty egg has been rinsed is clean, then the beauty egg should have been washed and can proceed directly to the drying step. If the rinsed water still looks dirty, skip the drying step and use the deep cleaning method (see the “deep cleaning” section of this article).

6
Dry with a paper towel. Gently squeeze the egg with your hands to remove excess water, then place it in a clean, dry paper towel to absorb the moisture from the egg.
If the egg is still damp after absorbing the moisture with a paper towel, place it in a dry place and continue to air dry until the egg is completely dry before using it.

Deep Clean

1
Deep clean your Beauty Blender only when necessary. Generally speaking, if after the basic cleaning process described above, your Beauty Blender still looks dirty, it needs to be deep cleaned.
If you use your beauty egg many times a day or forget to clean it within a week or so, then it is more likely to need a deep clean.
Observe the beauty egg so you know if it needs a deep clean. If the water in which you rinse your beauty egg still looks dirty after the basic cleaning is over, or if the beauty egg dries with visible stains, you can try a deep cleanse.

2
Wet the beauty egg. Rinse the beauty egg under running warm water for 30-60 seconds, or until it has absorbed enough water to swell to its maximum.
Or you can place the Beauty Egg in a bowl of warm water for 5 to 10 minutes. There is no need to use soapy water or wait until the water has changed color before proceeding with subsequent steps.

3
Apply the cleaner to the dirty areas. Gently apply a solid or liquid cleanser to the dirtiest areas of the egg.
As with the basic cleaning steps, a mild cleanser should be used on the egg. Specially formulated cleansers work well, but for other options, you can also use olive oil soap, baby shampoo, or “sensitive formula” organic shampoo.

4
Rub the egg with the palm of your hand. Rub the cleanser-applied part of the egg in small circles in your palm for about 30 seconds.
Rub more vigorously than in the basic cleaning process, but still with enough gentleness to avoid deforming or tearing the beauty egg.
As you knead, the makeup deep inside the egg will come out from the surface and you will notice that the soap bubbles on your hands turn into the color of foundation.

5
Rinse the egg while rubbing. Rinse the egg under warm water while continuing to make circular motions on your palm. Keep rinsing the egg until all the lather has been rinsed off.
It may take several minutes to rinse off all the cleanser. But it is important to rinse all the cleanser off, so don’t be too hasty.

6
Test the egg. Rinse the beauty egg again with tap water until all the foam is gone. Make sure the squeeze out is clean.
Apply more cleanser to the beauty egg and rub it with the palm of your hand. If the foam produced is white and not gray or beige, then the egg should be clean at this point.

7
Drying the Beauty Blender. Gently squeeze the egg with your hand to squeeze out the excess water. Then place the egg in a clean, dry paper towel to make it dryer.
After this the beauty egg may still be damp, so place it in a dry place for air drying. Only after it is completely dry, the egg can be used to apply makeup.

Sterilize at high temperature

1
Sanitize the sponge once a month. Even if you wash your beauty blender once a week, you should sanitize it at least once a month. This is especially important if you use your Beauty Blender every day. Routine cleaning will remove bacteria from the surface of the beauty egg, but if you want to kill the bacteria deep inside the egg, the only way is to sterilize it with a short autoclave.
You may need to sterilize more than once a month if you find that bacteria are growing faster. Signs of rapid bacterial growth include abnormal breakouts, and unpleasant or unusual smells inside the beauty egg.
You still need to do a basic cleaning after disinfecting the egg. Sanitizing will only kill the bacteria and will not remove any foundation or makeup stains.

2
Place the beauty egg in a bowl of water. Fill a microwaveable bowl with water about 2.5 cm deep and place the egg in the center of the water.
You must place the beauty egg in the water. Do not microwave a completely dry beauty egg, as this can damage the sponge material or cause the beauty egg to catch on fire.

3
Microwave for 30 seconds. Microwave the bowl without the lid in the microwave for 30 seconds at full power.
While heating the sponge in the microwave, keep an eye on the beauty egg. Don’t panic when the beauty egg expands slightly or emits a small smoke, but if it expands beyond its maximum volume or starts to smoke, it’s time to turn off the microwave immediately.

4
Let it sit for a while. Wait one to two minutes before taking the bowl out of the microwave and then take the Beauty Blender out of the water.
The beauty egg may be particularly hot at the end of the microwaving process, and the waiting time is mostly for its own safety. As soon as the beauty egg is cool enough to touch, you can continue to handle the beauty egg.

5
Dry the beauty egg. Gently place the beauty egg into a clean, dry paper towel and let it sit at room temperature until it is completely dry.
If you plan to do a basic cleaning after heat sterilizing the egg, you can clean it right after you take it out of the microwave without drying the egg first.
Wait until the beauty egg is completely dry before using it.

Tips
Clean your beauty egg once every one to two weeks. If you use your beauty egg every day, you should perform a basic cleaning routine once a week. Even if you only use your Beauty Egg a few times a week, you should clean it once every two weeks.
Daily cleaning removes most of the makeup that builds up on the surface of your beauty egg and also removes some of the makeup hidden inside the egg, it also kills most of the surface bacteria. A sponge left unclean for a long time will promote the growth of bacteria.
